quill writing on a piece of yellow paper

When the world dims and shadows lengthen, what do you feel? And what if you try to replicate this feeling on a piece of paper, or rather on a piece of digital paper, a white slate where you can express, promote, explain, and impress your reader? This, I call Melanfolia. It's a space where the beauty of darkness is explored not through fleeting snippets, but through the depth and richness of long-form writing.

Welcome to Melanfolia Blogs, a quartet of four online publications filled with in-depth articles and informative reads that delve into the heart of a special reader.

About Melanfolia Blogs...

...it is an interconnected "meshwork" of four distinct blogs, each dedicated to publishing high-quality, long-form articles and in-depth content. Information is the priority here, but the aesthetic side is also present! This social network aims to provide readers with a space (safe space) for intellectual engagement and thoughtful exploration of diverse subjects across a range of focused publications. Mainly related to beauty, fashion, lifestyle, and other interesting niches of our life.

Melanfolia is a type of feeling...

...you get when twilight paints the world in deep purples and blues, a quiet, almost seductive stillness. It's not sadness, but a longing for the beauty of darkness, a pull towards the mystery of fading light. It's a serene yet vibrant feeling, a desire to hold onto that fleeting, magical moment, a "black feeling," as the Latin words suggest. Through my work, I aim to share this unique experience, inviting you to feel the quiet beauty of "Melanfolia" with me.

The word "Melanfolia" is a fusion between 'melan,' the Latin for dark-colored, and 'folia,' meaning feeling – which captures this complex emotion. It's the soul's quiet dance with the darkness, a yearning for the depth and mystery held within the night's embrace. The words, of course, can't describe it exactly, but I hope you'll come up with your own understanding of it.

Melanfolia Blogs for those who still read...

...and quite enjoys this relaxing process. The reading itself is not a goal here, but a means of delivering useful information in the best way possible. Some call it old-fashioned, but I believe it is the only effective form some of us still truly enjoy and experience daily. Think of this as an art form that will always exist. Just like oil painting still thrives in the digital era, calligraphy is still popular, even if we all use the keyboard.

Melanfolia's motto is:

The current motto that best describes Melanfolia Blogs is "One page after another." This is similar to one step at a time, grain by grain or drop by drop. One page after another fills in the vast emptiness of the internet, becoming a uniform word we hear every day – the content.

Remember when lipgloss was a serious accessory? I literally wore one of those tiny lippies as a keychain! Butterfly clips reigned supreme, and frosted eyeshadow could solve any fashion-related problem? If your inner tween is screaming for a revival, buckle up, buttercup. Today, we're diving headfirst into the glorious, gloriously trashy world of Y2K makeup. Why 'trashy'? Well, let's be honest, there's a certain delightful cakiness to some of these looks. But, on the other hand, we seriously love them, don't we?

Get ready to dust off those glitter pots and unleash your inner pop princess because these 10 looks are guaranteed to teleport you straight back to the days of dial-up and double denim. But, before I start, I wanted to express my gratitude to the FeedSpot platform for giving me a chance to be featured in the top 100 Best Beauty Blogs. I'm honored to be recognized by professionals in the sphere. So, let's begin.

What Are the Main Y2K Makeup Characteristics?

The defining characteristics of Y2K makeup were a bold, unapologetic embrace of playful excess. Think shimmering, frosted finishes applied with a heavy hand, where icy blues and pinks reigned supreme on eyelids and lips alike. Gloss, often flavored and sticky, was a non-negotiable accessory, creating a high-shine, almost wet look.

Rhinestones and glitter were liberally applied, turning faces into sparkling canvases, while thin, overdrawn eyebrows, often paired with dark lip liner and lighter lipstick, created a striking contrast. It was a look that prioritized a youthful, almost doll-like appearance, fueled by the era's pop music and technology-driven optimism, resulting in a distinct aesthetic that celebrated artificiality and a touch of delightful, self-aware "trashiness."

  • #1. Pam-like Nude Lips

As seen on Pam Anderson and countless early '00s models and celebrities! A beige-toned, almost concealer-esque lip reigned supreme, often paired with a high-shine gloss, creating a deliberately washed-out yet pouty effect. This lip look is usually paired with kohl-black eyeliner on the inner waterline.

Christina Aguilera in the '00s

  • #2. Xtina and Frosty Eyeshadow

Shimmering, icy hues, particularly silver, lavender, and pale blue, were applied with a heavy hand across the entire lid, designed to catch and reflect light with a distinctly synthetic gleam. Don't be shy to go up to the brow bone, and complete the look with raspberry pink lips.

  • #3. Leopard Print Eyes

To tell the truth, I'm still obsessed with this look. Embracing animalistic patterns, meticulously painting miniature leopard spots around the eyes, was my gem. Want it even trashier? Go for pink spots all over your eye lids.

avril lavigne with red eyeshadow and lip gloss

  • #4. Avril and Red Smoky Eyes

A rebellious take on classic smoky eyes, deep crimson and burgundy shades smudged with abandon, conveying a raw, edgy intensity. I loved her "Complicated" era the most; therefore, I can't get enough of this gorgeous look. What do you think?

paris hilton and raccoon eyes eyeshadow

  • #5. Paris' Raccoon Eyes

Nude lipstick and raccoon eyes? Any day! It looks like Paris Hilton went further and added a pair of bright circle lenses to this 2000s look. Thick, dark eyeliner and muted black eyeshadow up to the brow bone, which encircled the entire eye, both top and bottom. This look is truly something...

purple under eye eyeshadow

  • #6. Heavy Under-eye Accent

Rather than concealing, the under-eye area became a canvas for deliberate emphasis, with dark liner or shadow creating a shadowed, almost dramatic depth, challenging conventional notions of a "bright" under-eye. This look focused on drawing attention to the lower eye area, creating a heavy, and sometimes very dark, look.

  • #7. Barbie Pink Craze:

Who said that the Barbie doll-inspired look wasn't popular in the early '00s? A wave of intense, saturated pinks, ranging from bubblegum to fuchsia, flooded the beauty scene, embodying a playful, unapologetically feminine aesthetic that celebrated bold color. This wasn't a subtle blush; it was a declaration of vibrant, plastic-inspired beauty.

rihanna bob and pink lips in the '00s

  • #8. Rihanna's Pink Lips Phase

Do you remember Rihanna in the early to mid '00s? Her style was so different back then, but she still remains the fashion and style icon for many of us. What do you think of this bright pink lip look? Vibrant, bubblegum, or hot pink lip colors always provide a pop of playful femininity, contrasting with a more neutral or minimalist eye look. Not here, of course. Here, Rihanna went navy blue blended with black pencil eyeliner, and I loooooove it!

a portrait of a woman with blue mascara and nude lipstick

  • #9. Electric Blue Mascara

Dark purple, bright yellow, or electric blue? Doesn't really matter! This '00s trend is surely a bold departure from traditional black, electric blue mascara-coated lashes, adding a striking, unexpected flash of color that stood out prominently.

  • #10. Blinding Eye Corners

How about some blinding highlighter in the inner corners of your eyes? Nowadays, it is all about the brow bone and cheeks; back then, it was all bout the inner corners. A concentrated, intense shimmer or glitter was applied to the inner corners of the eyes, designed to dramatically brighten and widen the gaze with a dazzling sparkle.

Concluding...

You've seen the looks; now it's time to own them. Forget what anyone else thinks – the Y2K aesthetic is about expressing yourself with confidence and a healthy dose of sparkle. Maybe you can even pair this makeup with 90s wardrobe pieces- why not? So grab your gloss, load up on the glitter, and show the world your inner 2000s icon. Because sometimes, a little trashy is exactly what you need to shine.
